Nii Commey has been adjudged the best theatre and arts winner for the maiden Under 40 Achievers Awards.

One of Ghana’s most prolific Playwrights and Theatre Practitioners, Nii Commey has been adjudged the best theatre and arts winner for the maiden Under 40 Achievers Awards.

In all, forty Ghanaians from forty different sectors of the economy received awards for their pioneering and outstanding contributions towards their various fields of endeavours.

Nii Commey became one of the household names in contemporary theatre in Ghana with his hit stage plays Romantic Nonsense, You May Kiss The Corpse, and Judas Iscariot In Accra. He has gone ahead to mastermind some of the finest and high-quality theatre productions in Ghana.

He is also the Director of Laugh for Lives Africa, a social enterprise that uses the power of Radio Drama, Community Theatre, TV Docudrama, Mobile Theatre, Behavioral Change Communication and Dramatherapy to create awareness, advocate and empower the underprivileged in rural communities. Back in 2005, Nii Commey wrote about seven episodes of the award winning television sitcom, Suncity, which aired on GTV for years.

Nii has over the past 13 years masterminded some of the finest and high-quality theatre productions in Ghana. He has also been contracted by outfits like GCB, Vodafone, Nestle and Ministry Of Children, Women And Social Protection, Joy FM Bridal Fair, and International Women’s Fair to write, direct and produce stage plays for them.

“It’s a day worth celebrating with all the countless audience who have over the years supported me through the rugged and smooth roads. To the various cast and crew who have played major roles in raising the bar in theatre and arts; to all corporate bodies, media houses and all individuals who have supported, prayed and contributed in diverse ways to bring me this far, may the God reward you abundantly for the trust reposed in me.” Nii spoke after receiving the award.

Nii Commey has also produced several radio, stage, community and social media theatre productions for social change campaigns for international organizations like SOS Children’s Villages Ghana and the German Government though GIZ."

He is a multi-disciplinary professional, with training in Advanced Playwriting from the University of Ghana, as well as Communication Studies from the same University and Community Development from Wisconsin International University College, Ghana. He has written more than 45 plays, more than 200 inspirational poems, published two poetry books and directed 19 of his plays at various venues such as the National Theatre, Golden Tulip in Kumasi, Efua Sutherland Drama Studio, University of Ghana and Perez Chapel. His plays, You May Kiss the Corpse, Dusty Cathedral and Mummy’s Dimples and Pimples have been the toasts of university lecturers from the Theatre arts departments at the University of Cape Coast and University of Education Winneba.

Nii Commey is currently running the WHERE TWO OR MORE WOMEN ARE GATHERED brand of plays and getting ready to stage his latest play, SKIRTS AND SUITS at the National Theatre on October 28.
