University of Ghana Receives Delegation from Ankara University

 

The University of Ghana is signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ankara University, Turkey to commence collaborations between the two institutions. 

Prof. Francis Dodoo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development, received the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu. 

Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Dodoo said the Vice-Chancellor who was looking forward to meeting the delegation from Ankara University had to attend to a national assignment at very short notice.  He thanked the officials from Ankara University for the visit and expressed excitement about the collaboration.  Referring to the similar characteristics and vision shared by both institutions, Prof. Dodoo was hopeful that the collaboration between the University of Ghana and Ankara University would yield fruitful results and provide an avenue for effective interactions among students and faculty.

Prof. Dr. Erkan Ibis, Rector, Ankara University who led the delegation, said he was elated to be at the University of Ghana and was looking forward to an enhanced relationship between the two institutions.  He gave a brief overview of the Ankara University and said he was optimistic the MoU will benefit the two institutions in many academic disciplines.

The areas of cooperation in the MOU are academic programmes that are of mutual interest to the two institutions, i.e. education and training and research and development.

In brief remarks, the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H. E. Ozlem Gulsun Ergun Ulueren who accompanied the team, noted that the MoU will open new avenues for collaboration in academia and also bridge the gap between the two countries as it will lead to a better understanding between Ghana and Turkey.

Two other agreements, the Erasmus Programme and the Mevlana exchange programme which are all aimed at providing students from the University of Ghana with an opportunity to further and continue their education at Ankara University and engage in collaborative research were discussed and agreed to in principle.  The Erasmus programme (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is an initiative run by the European Union (EU) with support from some selected Universities in Europe. It provides opportunities for students to study or gain work experience in a different European country while completing a degree.

The Mevlana Exchange Programme is a Turkish government sponsored programme which provides a platform for exchanges between students and academic staff of Turkish higher education institutions and higher education institutions in other countries.

Prior to the signing, the Coordinator of EU Educational Institutional Programmes, Ankara University, Prof. Dr. Sibel Suzen made a presentation on the academic programmes and activities of the Ankara University, and later dwelt extensively on the offers available under the Erasmus programme and the Mevlana programme.  She was hopeful the University of Ghana would take advantage of the many opportunities for faculty members, administrators and staff.

Dr. Ilhan Karasubasi, an Assistant Professor and Coordinator for International Relations at the Ankara University reiterated the sentiments expressed by the other members of the delegation and said he was committed to ensuring the success of the collaboration with the University of Ghana.

As part of the visit, the team from Ankara University engaged with some units of the University; Professor Dzodzi Tsikata, Director of African Studies, Rev. Dr. Grace Sintim Adasi a Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, Dr. Fritz Biveridge, Head of Department, Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Dr. David Dodoo-Arhin and a team from the Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering, School of Engineering Sciences.

Officials of the University who participated in the discussions were Prof. Anthony Adjei, Coordinator, Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Teams, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, Registrar, Prof. Daniel Asiedu, Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Science, Prof. Michael Tagoe, Acting Provost College of Education/Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, Director, Public Affairs, Dr. Ibrahim Bedi, Ag. Director, Internal Audit, Dr. Olivia Anku-Tsede, Legal Counsel.  Other senior administrators who were in attendance were Mrs. Christy Badu, Acting Director, Academic Affairs, Mr. Joseph Nkansah, Office of the Vice-Chancellor and Mr. Kojo Essiaw from the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate.

The ceremony was climaxed with exchange of gifts between the two Universities after which there was an official luncheon in honour of the guests.
