University of Ghana Sports Personalities Honoured at Vice-Chancellor’s Award Ceremony

The Sports Directorate has presented awards to deserving sports men and women during the 2017/2018 academic year at a dinner ceremony on Friday, 27th April, 2018. The ceremony was under the auspices of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, in honour of student athletes who have excelled within the academic year.

The “Vice-Chancellor Sports Awards Night” was graced by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Francis Nunoo, who stood in for the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu.  Other officials of the University community including some members of the University of Ghana Sports Advisory Board, Sports Management Committee and Management of Halls were in attendance. Among the invited guests and dignitaries were; Dr. Daniel McKorley, Honorary UG Sports Patron & CEO of McDan Group of Companies; Mr. Yaw Sakyi Afari, UG Sports Patron for Basketball & CEO of Rite Sports; Dr. Richmond Aryeetey, UG Sports Patron for Swimming; Mr. Gideon Kodo, Promasidor Limited, Ghana and Mr. Frank Boamah, TOTAL Ghana.

Mr. Kwame Opoku, the indefatigable Male Basketball Team Captain, won the Sportsman of the Year for the 2017/2018 academic year with 66.83% of votes cast.  He was recognised for his exploits at the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games held in Tamale this year; Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges Championship (UPAC) and the UG Basketball League. He won gold medals in all these competitions. Naa Shika Adu polled 69.11% to beat fellow athlete Catherine Adjeley Nonome to win the Best Sportswoman of the Year. Naa Shika won three gold medals and a silver at the 2018 GUSA games. Both athletes received plaques and assorted items from Promasidor Limited, Ghana.

In his opening remarks, Professor Francis Nunoo, extended warm greetings to all partners and individuals who had contributed to the development and promotion of sports in the University. He also commended the Management and Staff of the Sports Directorate for ensuring that the image of the University with regards to Sports is ranked high among other tertiary institutions and nationally.

He recounted that the integration of sports into the academic curriculum, leading to the establishment of the Sports Directorate was worthwhile considering the successes so far. He added that Management of the University was well aware of the team’s outstanding performance at the recent GUSA games in Tamale and the UPAC games hosted by the University as well as challenges facing the development of sports on campus which had to do mainly with the provision of infrastructure. He assured the Directorate of Management’s commitment to improve infrastructure for sporting activities.

In his conclusion, Professor Francis Nunoo indicated that the University’s Management is currently reviewing plans to host GUSA 2020 and reiterated his assurance that Team UG would deliver during the competition.

The Commonwealth Hall was adjudged the Best JAMA Hall for the academic year, an award instituted by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Francis Nunoo.  They received an amount of Four Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢400.00). He challenged the other Halls to form groups to support their respective Halls during competitions and admonished them to choose decent words and songs when cheering their athletes.

Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, Director of Sports, in his speech congratulated all athletes who contributed immensely to the success of UG Sports. He expressed appreciation to members of the Sports Advisory Board, Sports Management Committee and Sports Ambassadors and Patrons for supporting the activities of the Directorate.

He highlighted the improvement in sport facilities which included the re-grassing of the main field, fencing of the basketball court and the swimming pool, a newly constructed volleyball court and refurbishment of the tennis court. He reiterated that work would soon commence at the University Stadium for the completion of the multi-purpose facility.

He added that the UG Sport Fund which was launched in June 2017, with over Three Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢300,000.00) contribution had given scholarship to twenty (20) students.
