Greetings from the University of Ghana and special greetings from the Alumni Relations Office! Ours is and has been a great story so far and there is no doubt about this!
At the time of its founding in 1948, UG enjoyed full funding by the Government of the day. Over the years however, such funding has decreased
significantly making it extremely difficult for Management to ensure that delivering our Mission of creating an enabling environment that makes University of Ghana increasingly relevant to national and global development through cutting-edge research as well as high quality teaching and learning, is not compromised.
Let me share some excerpts of the Editor’s comments in the Daily Graphic of 9th August, 2017 to expatiate the seriousness of this lack in funding and its associated concerns:
‘More students than ever before in history now enrolled in schools throughout Africa but the pipeline of
infrastructural development has not kept pace with the heavy demand.
Increasing enrollment rates has drastically outpaced educational funding, resulting in shortages of
instructional materials and supplies, poorly stocked libraries and overuse of facilities.
As we all know, state funding in higher education remains lower than before while
education costs have risen tremendously.'
Even though the UG cannot charge realistic fees, we are committed to continually build excellent academic programmes, committed faculty, and dynamic students to advance and influence the importance of our beloved alma mater and we cannot do this important work without you!
It is our strong belief that UG Alumni are not only stakeholders in our history, but partners in our future success.
The Office of Alumni Relations is here to add value to your alumni experience! We pledge to foster the UG spirit and keep you updated on happenings at the UG.
Our Office in collaboration with the UG Alumni Association, will endeavor to roll out programmes designed to build leadership, create traditions, support our current students and management, and further foster connections among our many alumni.
There are countless ways to help advance the work of UG so take a moment to contact us and contribute to enable us reach our goals.
We see an opportunity to do more and be more. We are ready and able!
Please consider investing in the University of Ghana, invest in our students and invest in our ability to seize our opportunities.
I am confident that with your commitment and support we can!
Now is the time, today is more relevant than ever! Together, we can and together we will make a difference!
Alumni Relations Officer.
